(Malibu, California) 4.2 magnitude earthquake hits Southern California
According to the USGS on Twitter, the earthquake was "too tiny" to cause local cell phones to send out alerts. The USGS's preliminary data indicates that the earthquake's epicentre was roughly 10 miles south of Malibu Beach.
The statement from officials read, "We know some of you felt shaking and we hope you took a protective measure like Drop, Cover, and Hold On."
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at two in the morning and was centred offshore at a depth of 14 kilometres, 16 kilometres south of Malibu Beach and due west of Los Angeles.
A 3.5 magnitude aftershock occurred at 2:03 in the morning, followed by aftershocks of gradually lower magnitude at 2:22 and 2:38 in the morning.
